This verse points at the reason of their rejection, which was relying on some vicious ideas and doctrine forged out of their fancies which are not conformed to any reason; such as their false claim that: ``Fire will not touch us except for a number of days!'' It was such forgeries that delluded them in their religion and turned them aside from the straight path of truth.
